IMD issues weather alert for South and North Bengal districts as thunderstorm activity persists through the weekend.
Thunderstorms and Rain to Persist in South Bengal Until SundayThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast ongoing thunderstorms and rainfall across South Bengal through Sunday, May 5, with the most intense weather expected on Friday. According to the department, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40–60 km/h and lightning strikes are likely in all southern districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, South and North 24 Parganas, and East and West Midnapore.
This weather pattern aligns with a broader low-pressure system affecting eastern India, increasing humidity and cloud cover across the region. The IMD warns of potential disruptions due to severe weather, particularly on Friday, when electrical activity is predicted to intensify.
North Bengal Districts to Witness Light to Moderate ShowersIn North Bengal, districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar are also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on Thursday, accompanied by winds between 30–40 km/h. These pre-monsoon showers are likely to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures while enhancing moisture levels in the region.
The rainfall is forecast to taper off gradually by late Sunday, following which meteorological models indicate a change in weather dynamics across the state.
Kolkata Sees Fog, Rain, and Lower TemperaturesIn Kolkata, the week began with morning fog and cooler-than-normal temperatures. On Thursday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 23.4°C, which is 2.7°C below normal, while Wednesday’s maximum was just 30°C, 5.6°C below the seasonal average. Humidity levels ranged from 77% to 96%, adding to the muggy conditions despite lower temperatures.
Although Thursday’s rainfall chances appeared slightly reduced due to overnight showers on Wednesday, light rain with thunderstorms remains likely in the evening or night hours. The forecast for the next 24 hours projects temperatures to remain between 23°C and 32°C in Kolkata.
Gradual Rise in Temperatures Expected from MondayStarting Monday, May 6, the IMD predicts a gradual rise in day temperatures across West Bengal. The return of dry and warmer conditions may lead to the re-emergence of pre-summer heat, especially in central and southern parts of the state.
While the current weather has brought temporary respite with pleasant conditions across several regions, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for potential changes in climatic conditions as the new week begins.
